Also, will some of the changes to the navigation and shopping experience being done to the large screen version as a result of the mobile UX changes actually fix this problem to some extent? @Kirsten perhaps you can shed some light on this?

We have a new checkout design that will be live soon.

It does not solve all issues mentioned here but some of them are not asked for anymore. closing and we can reopen in new wishlist repo if necessary.
